Marian drops hint she may do ‘Darna’

MANILA, Philippines—The successful run of “Marimar,” one of the most watched teleserye programs this year, has boosted lead star Marian Rivera’s career.

“Palipad na po ang susunod kong telenovela,” she said during the press launch of her PLDT Touch Cards campaign last week at Merk’s in Greenbelt 3. The statement seemed to confirm rumors that Marian is being groomed to portray “Darna” in a new series.

There are reports that GMA 7 will revive the top-rating fantasy series, which starred Angel Locsin as the mythical Pinay heroine. There are also talks that the Kapuso network is planning to cast Marian in either “Dyesebel,” another oft-remade komiks classic, or “Rosalinda,” another Thalia starrer that, like “Marimar,” had a large following in the Philippines.

Marian said she was not portraying Dyesebel or Rosalinda in her next project. “Binibigay ko lang po ang aking 100 percent sa lahat ng binibigay sa akin,” she added cryptically.

Rivera thanked televiewers for the continued high ratings of “Marimar” and said she would continue giving her best, as with the rest of the cast, in each of the forthcoming episodes of the local adaptation of the Mexican telenovela, which is slated to end in March 2008.

Next big star

Obviously, Marian was groomed by GMA 7 as its “next big star” after Angel moved to ABS-CBN. The popularity of “Marimar” indicates that Marian has met the Kapuso network’s high expectations. Her daily exposure on prime time TV has led to a string of commercial endorsement deals, such as this one for PLDT Touch Card.
