Filipino-American tennis favorite Cecil Mamiit retained his crown as Asia’s tennis king, as he bagged the country’s first gold medal in the singles event, increasing to 40 the Philippines’ gold haul at the 24th SEA Games in Thailand on Friday.
Mamiit, the defending SEA Games gold medalist, smashed his way to the top rank, beating Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke during the Men’s Singles match held at the His Majesty The King’s 80th Anniversary Tennis Court at 10 a.m.
Mamiit dominated both sets of the game with a score of 6-3 and 6-0.
Meanwhile, tennis tandem Diane Matias and Denise Dy was overpowered by their Thai opponents and had to settle for a bronze medal in the Women’s Doubles match.
As of this posting, Philippines remains locked in fifth place in the overall medal rankings with 205 medals, including 40 gold, 76 silvers, and 89 bronze medals. – GMANews.TV
