LOS ANGELES — Mexican actor Ricardo Montalban, best known for his role as Mr. Roarke in the 1970s-80s popular television series “Fantasy Island,” has died in Los Angeles, a city official said. He was 88.

With mellifluous voice and distinctive Spanish accent, Montalban also stood out in US television folklore as a Chrysler sponsor in the 1970s when he advertised the Cordoba’s “soft Corinthian leather” interior, much parodied by comics for years.

Montalban died at his home in Los Angeles, city councilman Eric Garcetti said. He did not provide a cause of death.

Montalban was wheelchair-bound and left with fragile health after a 1993 spinal operation, according to local press reports.

Born Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalban Merino in Mexico City in 1920, Montalban appeared on numerous television shows including “Bonanza,” “Start Trek,” and “Hawaii Five-O,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” and “The Virginian.”

But it was his role from 1978 to 1984 as Mr. Roarke, master of “Fantasy Island,” who could make every rich visitor’s dream come true, that earned him the most accolades.

He is also remembered as the villain Khan Noonien Singh in the 1967 TV series “Star Trek,” and played the same role in the 1982 film “Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.”

Montalban, who remained a Mexican citizen by choice throughout his life, won an Emmy Award in 1978 and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Screen Actors Guild in 1993.

In Hollywood, a few blocks from the Kodak Theater where the Oscars are awarded and the famous Chinese Theater, there is a film theater bearing Montalban’s name where Hispanic films are usually shown.

Montalban’s wife of 63 years, Georgiana Young, died in 2007. He is survived by four children.

Filipino actor Dingdong Dantes ranked third in E! Television’s 25 Sexiest Men of the World this year. The announcement was made by Mr. Brian Potter, rights and clearance supervisor of E!, during the Let’s Celebrate concert of Dingdong and Marian in Los Angeles, California.

Nakatanggap ng tawag ang PEP (Philippine Entertainment Portal) ngayong umaga, December 7, bilang update sa concert nina Dingdong Dantes at Marian Rivera, Let’s Celebrate sa Shrine Auditorium, Los Angeles.

Kagabi, December 6, ginanap ang naturang concert at isa itong tagumpay dahil sa dami ng taong mga nanood. Kung may 6,000 ang capacity ng Shrine Auditorium dahil sa laki nito, nasa more or less 4,000 daw ang mga nanood ng show.

Wala rin daw nakapigil sa dalawa sa pagbibigay ng magandang show kahit pa naka-cast pa rin ang isang paa ni Marian. Well-applauded daw ang number kung saan naka-wheelchair si Marian at pumasok din si Dingdong na naka-wheelchair at kumanta sila. Naging special guests ng dalawa sina Teri Onor at ang La Diva na binubuo nina Jonalyn Viray, Aicelle Santos, at Maricris Garcia.

Pagkatapos i-announce ni Mr. Potter na si Dingdong ang No. 3 sa ranking ng 25 Sexiest Men of the World, ipinalabas ang feature ng E! sa 25 Sexiest Men of the World na unang napanood sa United Kingdom, ang bansa ni David Beckham.

Sa speech ni Mr. Potter ay ito raw ang sinabi niya kay Dingdong: “It is overwhelming to see the tremendous support that they are giving to you here. E! made a very good choice to put you as the third sexiest men on the world that you rightfully deserve.”

Sinabi rin daw ni Mr. Potter na ang feature episode nilang 25 Sexiest Men of the World na ipinalabas sa UK ang highest rating ng E!. Naka-schedule ipalabas ang naturang feature sa iba’t ibang panig ng mundo, kabilang na ang Pilipinas.

Sa lahat ng ito, “overwhelming” daw ang pakiramdam ni Dingdong sa saya at importansiyang natanggap niya mula sa E! Television at sa naging mainit na pagtanggap sa kanilang show ni Marian sa Los Angeles.

But obviously, it was not only the Filipinos who noticed Dingdong’s “hotness.” E!, an international cable network, found out about the Filipino actor and decided to include him their annual sexiest list.

Dingdong is the first Filipino to be included in E!’s Sexiest Men of the World, and he is also the highest-ranked Asian this year.

StarStruck 3 Ultimate Survivor Marky Cielo reportedly died earlier today, December 7. The cause of death is not yet clear.

PEP (Philippine Entertainment portal) received a confirmed report earlier this afternoon, December 7, that young actor Marky Cielo died at dawn today. He was 20 years old.

However, the cause of death is not yet clear. An initial report says that Marky died in his sleep. His mother went up to his room in their house in Antipolo City around 6 a.m. to wake him up for a charity event. But he never woke up.

GMA-7 is expected to make an official statement any time soon.

Marky was a product of GMA-7’s StarStruck Batch 3, where he won as the Ultimate Sole Survivor. He was the first Igorot from Baguio City to join the popular reality-based artista search. Among his batchmates were Iwa Moto, Jackie Rice, and Gian Carlo.

After winning in StarStruck, he appeared in several GMA-7 shows which included Encantadia, Fantastikids, Bakekang, Asian Treasures, Boys Next Door, Kaputol ng Isang Awit, and Codename: Asero. But he was best known as Zaido Green in Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan.

He was also a mainstay of the musical-variety show SOP and in the primetime series La Lola.

Marky, who is also known for his dancing prowess, grew up in Butuan City but his family moved to the north.

His remains now lies at St. Peter’s Chapel in Quezon City.

MANILA, Philippines – Just a year ago, Manny Pacquiao facing Oscar de la Hoya appeared an improbable proposition.

But Pacquiao’s victory over his iconic opponent on Sunday (Saturday, US time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas could not have been thinkable in a lifetime.

Pacquiao carried out his game plan to textbook perfection and perhaps closed a chapter in the history of boxing after he defeated the legendary de la Hoya after eight rounds on Sunday (Saturday, US time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Active, methoidcal and simply dominant, Pacquiao took his time to trim down de la Hoya. His patience paid dividends midway through the match as de la Hoya’s left-side cheek began to swell.

When de la Hoya’s knees began to wobble and his eyes started to lose fire, Pacquiao went for the jugular. In the seventh, he cornered de la Hoya and pummeled him to the head and body. In the eighth, Pacquiao had de la Hoya by the ropes and pressed on the attack.

During the break after the round, de la Hoya’s side, wanting to avoid further humiliation, decided to surrender the match.

“I’m so lucky because I controlled the fight in the first round,” Pacquiao said. “That’s what we were working on everyday during training. Speed is the key to the fight. I used it in the fight.”

Pacquiao reached an all-new level of greatness after this one.

He climbed to 147 pounds to meet his boyhood idol and take a shot at the most lucrative deal of his career. After shredding de la Hoya, Pacquiao proved without a shadow of a doubt that he is boxing’s most prolific name to date.

“He deserves all the credit. He was the better man. He deserves all the accolades,” a dejected de la Hoya said. “He’s just a great fighter. I have nothing bad to say about him. He prepared well.”

Pacquiao has gone 3-0 this year, after decisioning Juan Manuel Marquez in April as a 130-pounder and bludgeoning David Diaz in June as a 135-pounder.

With his ward’s string of success, Freddie Roach, Pacquiao’s trainer, called out de la Hoya, challenging him to take on Pacquiao.

But the prospect of a Pacquiao-de la Hoya bout didn’t sit well with the boxing community, with most of them saying the five-foot-10 de la Hoya would run over the five-foot-six Pacquiao in a mismatch.

“It proved I was right,” Roach said.

But then David brought in more than a slingshot in this match versus Goliath.

Roach had always professed that if Pacquiao fought “the perfect fight”, Pacquiao would be able to take down de la Hoya.

That’s exactly what happened.

Pacquiao timed his in-and-out movements and regularly hit the slower de la Hoya on the face. He was quick on his feet when de la Hoya initiated. And his jabs found their way through de la Hoya’s porous defense.

In short, de la Hoya had no answers for The Pacman.

Roach, who belittled de la Hoya saying he “couldn’t pull the trigger” anymore, was on target after all.

When he was asked to comment on the abrupt ending of the match – and altogether probably his stellar pro career – de la Hoya was a picture of a finished man.

“I’m not shocked. At this stage of my career, (losses like this) are almost expected,” de la Hoya said.

If this is how it ends for de la Hoya, then it is both a sorry ending as it is a symbolic one.

The 10-time world champion has flip-flopped on the retirement question. Earlier this year, he said the Pacquiao fight would be his last. During training, he took that back and said he felt good enough to lengthen his run.

De la Hoya, who turns 36 in February, dodged the retirement issue again on Sunday. But it’s clear his time is up.

“I worked hard. I trained hard. But being inside the ring and training at the gym is totally different,” admitted de la Hoya, boxing’s top draw and far and away the king of pay-per-view sports.

If de la Hoya gives up fighting, the man who sent him off will make sure the void he leaves won’t be empty for so long.

In a virtual passing of the torch, Pacquiao seized the mantle as boxing’s most marketable fighter.

“You’re still my idol,” Pacquiao pointed to de la Hoya before Pacquiao was handed the microphone for an interview.

De la Hoya, it appeared, was more than willing to give up his throne.

“No, you’re my idol.” he pointed back.

MANILA, Philippines – After nine weeks in training camp and around 159 rounds of sparring, it is time for Manny Pacquiao to finally taper off for his 12-round fight with Oscar de la Hoya on December 7 (December 6, US time) at the MGM Grand Garden Hotel.

But for a fighter as intense as Pacquiao, slowing down doesn’t appear to be a part of his vocabulary.

Alex Arisa, Pacquiao’s conditioning and fitness coach, is amazed at how his fighter has managed to push himself to the limit and still keep his passion and concentration at the same high level.

“He’s probably the only fighter who can dictate how hard he can push himself,” said Arisa, who is working for Pacquiao for the second time after taking over from Justine Fortune last June or just prior to the bout with former world lightweight champion David Diaz.

“If [Pacquiao] wants to, he’ll push himself to 110 percent 100 percent of the time. Or he’ll slow down and speed up. It’s bizarre to see somebody be able to adjust their intensity level the way he does.”

Yet whether he likes it or not, Pacquiao has to finally cool down in his training with only less than a week left before inarguably the biggest fight of his career.

That means cutting the running into half, doing things at a slower pace and not pushing himself too much.

“He really trained hard for this fight so he really needs this period for recovery,” said the soft-spoken conditioning coach.

At the moment, Arisa said Pacquiao is on “top for sure” in terms of conditioning.

“He’ll probably be 95 percent ready a day before the fight. And with the rest and the food intake, he’ll be 100 percent on Saturday,” he added.

Arisa came under fire earlier during training for letting Pacquiao do plyometrics at training camp. Plyometrics is a type of exercise training designed to produce fast, powerful movements and improve the functions of the nervous system. But the method apparently didn’t work well with Pacquiao.

The workout was later blamed for Pacquiao’s sluggish movement in training, forcing Arisa and chief trainer Freddie Roach to later on set aside the exercise.

“You know, you can’t blame plyometrics,” Arisa said over lunch at Pacquiao’s Palazzo apartment Sunday. “It’s a very difficult training system, the principle, the method is very difficult.”

“With somebody like Manny, he would have adopted to it, but maybe [some guys] are a little fearful. They got a little scared. Freddie and I thought that he was gonna work through it, but they didn’t want to risk it,” he said. - GMANews.TV

GMA-7 bagged the Best Station trophy in this year’s 22^nd PMPC Star Awards for Television held at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. Other individual awardees that night include Piolo Pascual and Angel Locsin (in photo).

GMA-7 beat eight local channels, including fiercest rival ABS-CBN, to clinch the Best Station award in the 22^nd PMPC Star Awards for Television. The event, held annually by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC), took place last night, November 30, at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City.

But ABS-CBN was the “runaway” winner in the individual awards. A total of 26 categories by the Kapamilya programs and stars, and some 21 awards went to Kapuso network’s banner shows and performers.

The tandem of Angel Locsin and Piolo Pascual was a big winner for the primetime series Lobo, which won for Piolo the Best Drama Actor award. Angel Locsin won her very first first acting award, the Best Single Performance by an Actress, for the “Pilat” episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya?, which was voted Best Drama Anthology.

Lobo also won as Best Primetime TV Series.

“Lord, aktres na ako!” exclaimed a stunned Angel Locsin. It was a tight contest. Angel was pitted against senior drama heavyweights like Helen Gamboa, Cherry Pie Picache, Susan Roces, and Gloria Romero—who were also nominated for their performances in Maalaala Mo Kaya.

Young star Joshua Dionisio bagged the Best Single Performance by an Actor for Maalaala Mo Kaya’s “Sako” episode. Like Angel’s, Joshua’s victory was impressive, considering the other nominees—Gabby Concepcion, Dolphy, Eddie Garcia, and Gary Valenciano—vying for the same honor.

Piolo’s counterpart, as Best Actress for a primetime TV series, was Sunshine Dizon, who won the award for her lead role in GMA-7’s Impostora. It was Sunshine Dizon’s nth time to win the award from the PMPC.

PMPC also gave awards to first-time winners, like New Female TV Personalities Kylie Padilla (of Joaquin Bordado), and Patricia Gayod (of an MMK episode), and New Male TV Personality Robi Domingo (introduced to the public, via Pinoy Big Brother; now a MYX videojock).

For the comedy series, it was Ful House of GMA-7,and comedian Vic Sotto was voted best Male Host of Eat Bulaga!. Again, Eat Bulaga! won in the Best Variety Show category, but with a co-winner in ABS-CBN-2’s Wowowee. For the best female variety show host, the award went to Valerie Concepcion of Wowowee.

Ogie Alcasid won anew as Best Comedy Actor, while Rufa Mae Quinto was voted Best Comedy Actress, for GMA-7’s Bubble Gang.

Bitter rivals Eat Bulaga! and Wowowee shared the Best Variety Show award. TAPE Inc. (Television and Production Exponents) lady boss Malou Choa-Fagar received the award in behalf of the entire Eat Bulaga! staff while ABS-CBN’s Head of Corporate Communications Bong Osorio represented Wowowee.

For best game show, ABS-CBN’s Pilipinas, Game KNB? and its host Edu Manzano were both heavy favorites. But it was Edu’s son, Luis Manzano, who won the special award as Male Star of the Night; and Rufa Mae Quinto, the Female Star of the Night.

GMA-7’s Unang Hirit beat ABS-CBN’s Umagang Kay Ganda for Best Morning Show. But the Kapamilya show’s lady host, Pinky Webb, was indeed a “winner” herself when Edu Manzano, in his speech, acknowledged and thanked her presence. This somehow confirmed the status of their relationship.

Ditto Angel Locsin and Luis Manzano, in one of their rare togetherness, which proves they’re really on (or, as in, “more than just friends”).

The award won by Ruffa Gutierrez, as Best Female Showbiz-Oriented Talk Show Host for The Buzz was significant, in that she won the award more than a decade after an “infamous scam”; and in a tie with Cristy Fermin also of The Buzz, who’s currently serving a suspension from her radio and TV hosting. In her acceptance speech, Ruffa dedicated her award to her daughters, Lorin and Venice.

Ruffa and Cristy’s male counterpart is Boy Abunda, another perennial winner, for The Buzz, which also won Best Showbiz-Oriented Talk Show, and Boy and Kris, Best Celebrity Talk Show/Hosts. But Kris Aquino didn’t show up at the awards night.

GMA-7’s other awards include: Best Children Show/Hosts (Art Angel, with Pia Archangel, Tonipet Gaba, Krystal Reyes); Best Travel Show (Pinoy Meets World), Best Morning Show/Hosts (Unang Hirit); Best Youth-Oriented Program (Boys Next Door); Best Daytime Drama Series (Sine Novela Presents: Kaputol Ng Isang Awit); and Best Musical Variety Show (SOP Rules).

ABS-CBN, on the other hand, also won awards for the following: Best Educational Program/Host (Kim Atienza, of Matanglawin); Best Travel Show Hosts Katherine de Castro, Uma Khouny, Franzen Fajardo, Kian Kazemi, and Jason Gainza (Trip Na Trip); Best Magazine Show/Host (Korina Sanchez of Rated K); and Best Gag Show (Goin Bulilit).

Other shows, not aired on either Kapuso nor Kapamilya stations, which won this year’s Star Awards for TV trophies include: UNTV37’s Bitag and Ben Tulfo, for Best Public Service Program and Host; ABC-5’s Shall We Dance and Lucy Torres-Gomez (escorted by husband, Richard Gomez), Arnell Ignacio and Dominic Ochoa, for Best Talent Search Program and Host; Q11’s Gandang Ricky Reyes: Parlor Game for Best Reality Competition Program and Host; Q11’s Living It Up and hosts Raymond Gutierrez, Issa Litton, Sam Oh, and Tim Yap, for Best Lifestyle Show; Studio 23’s Y Speak (Best Public Affairs Program); Q-11’s Hot Seat, Best Host, Jessica Soho.

For the special awards, Ms. Rosa Rosal, of the Philippine National Red Cross and best known for hosting the public service programs, Damayan and Kapwa Ko, Mahal Ko , and the comedy show, Iyan Ang Misis Ko, received the Ading Fernando Lifetime Achievement Award. Ms Rosal was joined by fellow veteran actresses of LVN Pictures, Ms. Delia Razon and Ms. Lilia Dizon, as they reminisced some “good ‘old days” wayback when.

Another special awardee was Sen. Loren Legarda, who received the Excellence in Broadcasting Award, and, together with Rosa Rosal, was serenaded onstage by singer-comedian, Ogie Alcasid.

Presented by the Philippine Movie Press Club (PMPC), the 22nd Star Awards for Television is produced by M. R. Productions, in cooperation with Airtime Marketing, Inc. Overall direction is by Al Quinn with Lito Calzado asstage director. It was hosted by Paolo Bediones, Judy Ann Santos, Anne Curtis and Gabby Concepcion, with Dingdong Dantes and Iza Calzado as trivia hosts.

A delayed telecast on primetime TV-5 is scheduled tomorrow, December 2, from 8 to 11 pm.
